Racine Art Quilters

The meeting is always held on the second Monday of the month. Our meeting place is 14015 Washington Ave, at the Racine County Convention and Visitor's Bureau, 7:00-9:00 pm. The room is available to us at 6:45. Enter through the rear doors marked "Employees Only." Directions from Racine: head west on Hwy 20 and the building is just past Culver's, west of I-94. Bring your most recent art quilt, ideas, books to share, and a friend.

If you are new to RAQ you are welcome to attend a meeting. Please plan to join us for the "after the meeting festivities" at Culver's next door. We just go to have fun and enjoy a cup of coffee or an ice cream treat!

Old News

Our very first meeting was held on March 4, 2002, a cold snowy night. We had 21 people come from Waterford, Mukwonago, Kenosha and Racine. It was amazing to find so many quilters that were interested in expanding their creativity! Our second meeting, held in April had a few less people attending, but the discussion was quite lively. Hopefully, the meetings will continue to have as much interaction between the members. Ann Fahl gave a short presentation about the importance of keeping an inventory of all the quilts that you have made. The third meeting in May, was just as lively, with 17 people attending. New people are still finding us. We heard a report about the AQS show in Paducah, KY, saw some quilts and new books on the market. We voted to hold the next meeting at the Racine County Visitor's Bureau. The December meeting was small, but the members are starting to get to know each other. The discussion was brisk, work was shown, and we all had ideas for the new year. We finished up at Culver's.

General Information

Ann Fahl has started a group for quilters interested in making quilts in an original and artistic manner. This is for anyone wanting to explore quilting, beyond the boundaries set by traditional quilting.

This is not a quilt guild. This is not an attempt to take members away from the several quilt guilds we have in Racine, Kenosha and Walworth Co. This is an artists support group, for quilters at any level, beginning to professional.

Purpose

The purpose will be to encourage the making of art quilts in Racine County and surrounding area, by supporting and educating its members. The exchange of information and ideas in a positive manner will encourage growth and productivity of each individual at their own pace.

Goal

The ultimate goal will be to increase public awareness of art quilts by showing our work, either as a group or individually. To do this we must encourage each member in their effort to create original meaningful work. This boosts confidence in abilities, and provides a safe positive atmosphere for experimenting in the art quilt medium.

Membership

At the present time I am looking for interested artists and quilters. Currently, we are seeking individuals only, from Racine, Kenosha or Walworth County, WI. If you are interested, please spread the word. Contact Ann at 262-633-3262.

Meeting Format

It is my hope that the meetings will be quite informal. We will begin with introductions, followed by the showing of work. Each member will bring a new work, tell its background, story and intent. Share any new technique or ideas found. One may ask for help or input from the group. As the group gets started, I hope that members will share in facilitating the meeting, eliminating the need for officers and bylaws.

Your help in achieving my goal, of supporting and inspiring the membership of this group is appreciated.
