A photo of Ma Sunday’s (wife of Billy Sunday the evangelist) grotto is the focus of this photographic portrait of Winona Lake IN. It is located on the hillside in the fall of 2012 in front of their former home. I added a small green pieced border, a narrow black fused inner border and appliquéd some tiny gold/brown leaves scattered across the foreground. It is machine quilted with The Bottom Line thread, and bound with a mottled black bias binding.
No matter what the season, I always like to have a Winona quilt hanging somewhere in my home or studio. In mid-autumn I realized I didn’t have one with a fall theme. After looking through my picture files I found this image which I love. My husband is so taken with this piece, it may be displayed all year round.
In my youth, Ma Sunday was still alive. Her grotto had fallen into disrepair and was like a swamp. I never would have walked down into it. In the early 2000's it was cleaned up and repaired so the public could walk through. In Winona's glory years there may have been fish swimming in the little stream that runs through it.
