This tiny quilt was designed for my annual Valentine card in 2019. It was inspired by the Kilauea volcanic eruption on the big island of Hawaii last spring, 2018. My son and I were fortunate to see the area and large caldera 2 years prior, and it was amazing.
On this quilt we have a black cotton heart with a volcano erupting at the lower point. The volcanic action is depicted by a small spiral appliqued over the lava and ascending flames. The sparks are represented by the night stars and hearts floating above.
The stars were cut from a commercial print of gray and white, and appliqued with silver metallic thread. The small hearts are covered with a rich coral decorative thread. The subject is fused on a hand dyed turquoise cotton fabric which is heavily machine quilted with a turquoise variegated thread. It is signed in the lower right corner and is bound with a black and turquoise plaid cut on the bias. Wool batting inside.
