Dreaming was inspired by an award given to an earlier quilt. I decided it was time to challenge myself to design something different. So...
Three swan-like shapes cut from a hand painted fabric, drift in the water after dark. The Egyptian-like stars light their way. Cattails and fish are growing and swimming in the lake. All are set on a background of very dark six-inch squares in red, brown, blue, purple and black. I removed some areas of the swans and fish, to create a new way to give them more visual interest. The colors of the background, show through the empty spaces. The subjects are either machine embroidered or appliqued onto the background with polyester variegated threads. The machine quilting patterns change from cloud patterns in the sky, to a watery texture in the lake. The border repeats the cloud design on the outer edges.
When this quilt was almost finished, a friend who is a golfer, suggested that the piece was missing something! It was suggested that some golf imagery be included. So a golf ball is embedded in the quilt, can you find it?
The quilt has wool batting inside and is quilted with decorative variegated threads. The fabrics used are hand dyed, painted, and commercial cottons. I love the way the thread subtly enhances the central design. The outside edges are faced instead of using bias binding.
