Ann's Arbory by Ann Fahl
Ann's Arbory is my third post-pandemic quilt. It feels so wonderful to be creative again. The idea started from a photo that I took of a hillside garden at my home. The neighbors that live across the street get to see my garden everyday in August and September. Hopefully the view will give them joy, it uplifts my spirits.
The Ann's Arbory title was inspired by a sign that my son and his partner put in their garden. I have spent many hours helping them with planting, weeding etc. It was their thank you for all my help and quite an honor.
The background roughly is 6 inch squares in three colors; Yellow, Red and Blue are pieced together. In the garden background there is native grass and tall purple phlox that are fused in place. Growing in the center portion, are my beautiful Sedum that love living on the hill! They really aren't yellow, but the color works better on the background. Their flower heads are giant and bees and butterflies love resting on them. In the front portion, are hundreds of Rudbeckia or Black Eyed Susans. These are my favorites. Long ago, they were transplanted from Winona Lake, IN, my favorite place.
Everything is embroidered in position with variegated shiny threads. The background is heavily quilted with variegated threads as well. The outside edges are faced instead of the traditional bias binding. The quilt center is almost chaotic, so it didn't need any extra visual interest on the outer edge. Enjoy.
